11AM - PRESS CONFERENCE (South Lawn Steps at 1st and Main St)
12:15PM - CITY HALL CHAMBERS HEARING
1PM - HEARING BEGINS
Last week, Councilmenbers Joe Buscaino (Public Works Committee Chair) and Curren Price (Economic Development Committee Chair) issued a joint letter to City Council that outlines a framework and action plan for a citywide street vending policy. After 3 years of direct actions, advocacy meetings, research, and organization of a vendor base across the city – our coalition has been able to pressure our city leaders to take action. Many of you have been deeply involved in this effort, and have been critical to building a citywide movement that supports #LAStreetVendors right to work, and have fought for them to be treated with the dignity and respect that they deserve.
After a grueling trek through multiple committee hearings and town halls across the city, the committee members have taken action to move this policy once step closer to reality. Our coalition has vigorously pushed, pulled, and advocated for a comprehensive approach that decriminalizes vendors, and removes the ridiculous and punitive barriers to their sustainability. We applaud the City’s efforts to move this in the right direction, and we will ramp up pressure on parts of the proposed-framework that we believe to be problematic and not in line with our values.
A committee hearing is scheduled for December 12th, 1pm in council chambers. We will be hosting a press conference prior to the hearing. PLEASE MARK YOUR CALENDARS. PLAN TO LINE UP OUTSIDE COUNCIL CHAMBERS BY 12:15pm.
